ABOUT HOUSING HUMANS

ABOUT HOUSING HUMANS

Housing Humans, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization,

borne out of the pain and helplessness of witnessing my

youngest sister, Marcella Dawn Tate (1975 – 2019), struggle

with addiction and homelessness. After spending time in jail,

Marcy found her way to sobriety and housing with the help of

Front Door, a compassionate, nonprofit organization in New

Hampshire. It felt like a true miracle. Unfortunately, two and a

half years into her sobriety, Marcy suffered a fatal overdose.

Currently, as a grassroots nonprofit, Housing Humans distributes supplies as donations

come in that help provide warmth and comfort, primarily focusing on the coldest

winter months. Starting with Thanksgiving Day we provide as many $5.00 as we can

afford, as well as warm layers (32 Degrees tops/bottoms from Costco for example),

hand warmers, and socks. We also like to focus on the things that most of us take for

granted: cold medicine, ibuprofen, cough drops, EmergenC packets, lip balm, ramen,

hot chocolate, sodas/energy drinks. Ramen is popular as well as gloves, of course.

Missoula Children’s Theater has helped us by doing a warm clothing drive during one

of their performances for the past two years. This has provided many coats, hats, and

scarves.

In past years Housing Humans has also provided: firewood, propane canisters,

propane stoves, tents, sleeping bags, boots, and pillows to name a few things that are

highly requested.

We were recently at the Johnson Street warming shelter. There were many requests for

BLANKETS. We are hoping to get our hands on some!

The most rewarding part of this work, for me, has been looking people in the eye and

letting them know someone cares. I’ve only ever encountered kindness, gratitude, and

tears. I don’t think there is anything more important than showing up for those in need.
